Many of the towers are either monkeys, units maintained by a monkey, or units owned by a monkey, with the exception of Tack Shooter, Bomb Tower, Ice Tower (between BTD1 to BTD4), and Banana Farm (unless upgraded to Monkey Bank or above, or Marketplace or above). Each tower contains upgrades that boost the power of itself and/or other towers. All towers are unique, with increasing power generally accompanied by increasing cost. Throughout the Bloons TD series, every tower except the Banana Farm can attack bloons without upgrades ( Monkey Village can attack with the High Energy Beacon and Primary Expertise upgrades). However, there are special types of tower that have different requirements for unlocking and placement, such as Special Agents and placeable Powers (which cost Monkey Money), as well as Heroes (which automatically level up and become stronger every round) and Sub-Towers (descendants of parent towers). Unless specified by special challenge rules, there is no limit to how many of these infantry units can be placed, although most towers each occupy a footprint that consumes space.
